    Release Coupe 20VT 1996

    -----------------------------------------------------------

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 1996

FIAT COUPE - NOW WITH 20v 5-CYLINDER POWER

Widely acclaimed since its introduction to the UK, the Fiat Coupe range has just acquired the company's sophisticated new five-cylinder 20-valve engines, in normally aspirated and turbocharged guise.

What Car? magazine's Coupe of the Year 1996, which has proved to be a huge success in the UK, thus has its enviable position further strengthened as a class-leading bespoke high performance sportscar.

Fiat Auto's sophisticated new 2.0 litre five cylinder engines give both versions of the Coupe a notable boost to power, torque and economy figures. In the case of the Coupe 20v Turbo, this is now the fastest production model that Fiat Auto has ever built.

The performance figures are impressive. The new Fiat Coupe 20v develops 147 bhp at 6100 rpm, and 137 lb. ft of torque at 4500 rpm; while the Coupe 20v Turbo develops 220 bhp at 5750 rpm, and 228 lb. ft of torque at just 2500 rpm - to deliver the kind of performance that in every respect mirrors the car's uncompromising stance and visual appeal.

A 'snapshot' of both cars' potential shows that the Coupe 20v is capable of 132 mph, with 0-62 mph acceleration in 8.9 seconds. The Coupe 20v Turbo is capable of 155 mph and its 0-62 mph sprint takes just 6.5 seconds. With 110 bhp per litre it is one of the fastest 2-litre production cars currently available, and, by a large margin is set to become the most powerful coupe on sale in the UK under £30,000.

The arrival of the new engines, both of which possess twin overhead camshafts, variable valve timing, four valves per cylinder, and a counter-rotating balancer shaft, has been accompanied by a number of detail styling changes, a new braking system for the Coupe Turbo, a wider range of body colours and new interior design and equipment. The aim of these revisions is to accentuate the car's characteristics as a desirable and luxurious four seater coupe that combines real sporting muscle with all¬round comfort ensured by suitable climate control and a high level of finish.

    The new engines in detail
Both these new 2-litre 5-cylinder 20-valve power units belong to Fiat Auto's modular engine family built at the company's state-of-the-art engine plant at Pratola Serra near A vellino. The turbo version - one of the most powerful 2.0 litre production engines currently available - is making its first appearance, and is thus unique to the Coupe at the present time. The normally aspirated 147 bhp engine is already available in (LHD) versions of the new Fiat Marea and Marea Weekend range, and the Fiat Bravo HGT all of which are due in the UK early in 1997.

Fiat Auto's latest five-cylinder engine technology offers the benefits of notably compact dimensions, which enable the units to be mounted transversely, together with power, torque and refinement comparable to an in-line six. In the case of the 20v Turbo engine, the addition of a sophisticated and painstakingly engineered turbocharger system increases its power by approximately 50 per cent.

The heart of the system is the turbocompressor unit, which Fiat Auto's engineering team have developed together with Garrett's specialists, dedicating particular care to component size. The result is a highly compact turbocompressor with a notably high rate of airflow, (over 700 kg/h), capable of achieving impressive performance while simultaneously limiting exhaust back pressure and offering low rotational inertia ¬characteristics which have made it possible to obtain remarkably low fuel consumption on the one hand, and more responsive performance on the other.

So-called 'turbo lag' problems, typical of turbocharged engines, have also been markedly reduced on this unit. Turbo lag is a delay in engine response experienced when the driver demands power rapidly, and floors the accelerator pedal when the engine is turning at low RPM. The problem is due to a temporary lack of the energy required to accelerate the turbine from its 20,000 rpm idling speed to its 150,000 rpm maximum.

Fiat Auto's engineers ensured that the 2.0 litre 20v Turbo has the energy required for rapid engine response by working on the valve timing, engine management system, intake and exhaust port geometry, and by reducing the inertia of the turbocompressor unit itself. The result is an engine that's effectively as responsive as a large displacement normally aspirated design.

To achieve this objective, Fiat Auto engineers calculated and experimentally refined the external and internal flow dynamics of the engine, considering it as a single system in which all components interact with each other and contribute to the end result. The induction system has therefore been tailored to the engine's needs, with very careful attention being paid to the entire system, from the air cleaner all the way to the 'mouths' of the valves themselves.

The inlet manifolding was conceived to meet the specific requirements of a modern turbocharged engine such as the 2.0 litre 20v Turbo, and it therefore differs from the manifold on the corresponding normally aspirated engine. The valve timing system is also unusual, being calibrated to meet the specific needs of this engine.

The exhaust manifold is another component which has received considerable attention. A fundamental element in ensuring the efficiency and reliability of turbocharged engines, the manifold must be designed in such a way as to maximise the amount of gas in the turbine inlet, while simultaneously withstanding severe thermal stresses. Which is why Fiat Auto's engineers first chose a design that reduces to a minimum the disturbance typical of the cylinder's exhaust stroke, and then focused on the shape of

the ports and the actual structure of the casting to obtain maximum efficiency and durability. The resultant strength is further increased by the material chosen for the manifold - cast iron with a high nickel content.

The need to offer maximum reliability even when subject to high thermal and mechanical stresses typical of such a powerful engine also made it necessary to redesign other parts. These included the intake valves (stainless steel), exhaust valves (sodium filled), new profile pistons, connecting rods (steel), main bearings and big end bearings as well as the engine oil cooling system, and changing the water-oil heat exchanger used on the normally aspirated engine in favour of an air-oil design.

    New management system
The engine management system has also been brought into line with the engine's characteristics and is partially responsible for its impressively low fuel consumption, performance and tractability. The system used is an advanced Bosch Motronic unit with direct airflow measurement, multipoint injection, integrated ignition with individual coils mounted directly on the spark plugs, and detonation control on each individual cylinder. The device also controls the variable valve timing system, turbocharging level, and the solenoid valves for the cooling system and climate control compressor.

One of the most interesting features of this Bosch Motronic system is a device which recognises which gear is engaged and, where appropriate, limits turbocharging boost
in first and second gears to prevent excessive wheel spin. Viscodrive traction control is also part of the Coupe 20v Turbo's standard equipment.

This engine thus offers great power and punchy performance without penalising fuel consumption, which stays within an average of 28 mpg - something that can only be described as outstanding on an engine developing 220 bhp. The credit is due to the mean effective pressure (MEP) of 18.2 bar developed at peak torque by this engine, which means that it offers tremendous torque from low engine speeds, enabling the driver to use higher gears. The turbo charged engine therefore runs at lower engine speeds and with a higher load for a given road speed, thus increasing its performance and significantly benefiting fuel consumption. When an engine is working hard, and particularly if it is not turning at high RPM, that is when it is at its most efficient in terms of fuel consumption. Official fuel consumption figures for this engine show just how efficient it is.

Maintenance requirements are minimal thanks to the use of devices that make many adjustment and replacement operations unnecessary. These include, to name just a few, hydraulic tappets, an automatic timing belt tensioner, long-life spark plugs, an automatic adapting system that adjusts the injection settings and tickover, and a self¬diagnosis system for all main components and functions.

    New braking system
Last but by no means least, the Fiat Coupe 20v Turbo has an entirely new, more powerful braking system that Fiat Auto engineers have perfected in conjunction with Brembo. Combining one-piece aluminium alloy calipers (fixed front calipers with four pistons), thicker, larger diameter ventilated discs, and pads with an increased friction surface, the new system delivers responsive, well-modulated braking while reducing pedal pressure and travel required, offering higher resistance to fade during severe use, and ensuring constant pedal response.

    Normally-aspirated 2.0 litre 20v
Compared to the 16-valve 4-cylinder engine which it replaces, the normally-aspirated 20-valve 5-cylinder engine offers increased power and torque, bringing a higher top speed potential and improved acceleration and response.

With its almost 'square' dimensions, (82 x 75.65 mm), this 1998 cc engine represents the latest in high technology.

Like other Fiat engines in the new modular family, it has a cast iron block with integral liners, a crossflow aluminium alloy cylinder head, four-valves-per-cylinder and twin overhead camshafts controlled by a toothed belt which also drives the waterpump. the oil sump has a structural function to improve rigidity and sound suppression, and aluminium alloy pistons have steel inserts to limit expansion of the skirts, which in turn have graphite inserts to reduce friction.

The lubrication system incorporates a water-oil radiator mounted directly to the oil pump without external hosing, and a virtually straight intake manifold has been carefully optimised to maximise gas speeds at partial loads and low RPM, as well as at maximum power.

Ensuring smoothness and refinement, an auxiliary counter-rotating balancer shaft turns at the same speed as the crankshaft, controlled by one of the oil pump gears, balancing the reciprocating forces generated by the rotation of the engine internals.

The valve timing is of the variable speed type, with an electrohydraulic actuator acting on the intake camshaft. This has a beneficial effect on emissions, and also boosts power delivery, (between 2500 and 4500 rpm, it produces an average power increase of approximately 4 bhp). The intake valves measure 29.5 mm and the exhaust valves 25.5 mm.

Oil jets positioned at the base of the cylinder liners improve piston cooling, and the crankshaft, which rests on six journals, is forged in chromium molybdenum steel.

Fuel injection is governed by a Bosch Motronic 2.10 system (which also governs the ignition) with a hot film flow meter. Injection is of the phased sequential type with individually activated twin-jet injectors.

    Attractive and comfortable interiors
Increased refinement and comfort have been the aims of detail changes made to the interior. Today's customers want comfort and refinement from a sports car no less than from a luxury saloon. The Fiat Coupe features a new central console with a number of redesigned elements, including a new analogue clock, larger illuminated ashtray and new more convenient door mirror controls.

The heating and ventilation system is also a new design which automatically adjusts both the fan speed and the temperature of the air coming out of the nozzles in relation to the temperature set. The controls for the Max Defrost function and airflow distribution, as well as for activating the compressor and electrical recirculation are, on the other hand, all manual - as is that for the fan speed when passengers want to override the automatic setting with their own choice.

The Max Defrost function is a very convenient system for defrosting and demisting the windows as quickly as possible using just one control. Once selected, the device sets all the parameters by itself, setting air distribution to "Def', ventilation to maximum airflow, air mixture to maximum heat, recirculation to zero, and the heated rear window to timed operation.

All the controls satisfy rigorous ergonomic criteria, being intuitive to use, located in positions that are easy to reach, and marked by immediately recognisable symbols.

The door panels have been redesigned and integrated with other interior furnishings to create a wrap-around effect which increases passengers' perceptions of comfort. These panels also match the side and seat upholstery more closely, enhancing the sense of light and spaciousness in the interior. They also feature more functional, softer armrests and larger oddments pockets.

Distinguished since its launch as a sports car offering the internal dimensions of a saloon, with four real seats rather than the traditional 2+2 arrangement, the Fiat Coupe for 1997 also offers more storage space for personal effects, with a new seat-back pocket on the passenger side, and larger side pockets in the doors.

The boot has a higher level of finish, with a lined compartment, and the audio system has been upgraded with the fitment of a Clarion CD-compatible ARX 7170 R unit.

Externally, the '97 Fiat Coupe is characterised by its horizontally slatted front grille, third stop light at the base of the rear window and new identification markings on the rear pillars: 20v for the normally aspirated 2.0-litre engine and 20v Turbo for the turbocharged 2.0-litre.

The latter can also be recognised by its unique design 16 inch alloy wheels.

    Colour range
There are now eight body colours, five of which are metallic. One of the pastel colours, Sprint Blue, is new to the range, while Metallic Scots Green replaces Metallic Chamonix Green, and Metallic Portofino Blue replaces Metallic Blitz Blue.

The interiors, which complement the body colours, are available in a new greylblack sports fabric or optional tan or black grain leather upholstery.

Pricing of the new Fiat Coupe 20v and 20v Turbo will be announced shortly.
